Third Grade Reading Guarantee

The ability to read is the foundation of learning. Research shows that children who are not reading at grade level by the end of grade 3 are likely to have trouble learning in all classroom subjects in higher grades.  State law requires that students reach an appropriate level of reading competency by the end of grade 3 or they will be retained unless otherwise exempt.   Additionally, schools are required to provide extra intervention for students who are not meeting grade level benchmarks and place them on a Reading Improvement and Monitoring Plan. Information for parents of children entering kindergarten for the 2021-22 school year will be posted on our website under News & Updates on Monday, February 22. Parents will be able to view an informational video presented by the Fairfield Elementary School and Fort Miami Elementary School principals and also learn enrollment details, including the link to the online kindergarten enrollment form. Eligibility requirements: All resident children who will be five-years-old on or prior to August 1, 2021, are eligible to attend Maumee's kindergarten program. Unless a child successfully completes a kindergarten program, he or she is not permitted to enter the first grade. Please share this information with neighbors and family who have a child who will be eligible for kindergarten in August 2021. Once a child is enrolled, parents will be invited to attend live, virtual question and answer sessions in both March and April, presented by elementary principals and a kindergarten teacher.

If parents are unsure if their child will attend Fairfield Elementary School or Fort Miami Elementary School, they may use this link for the information. For additional information, please call Michele Loboschefski, Principal, Fairfield Elementary School (419-893-9821) or Joel Hefner, Principal, Fort Miami Elementary School (419-893-2201).
